Fundación Alvargonzalez de Gijón meets Juan Merediz

The Alvarzonález Foundation and the Ateneo Jovellanos organize the conference 'Route of Discovery. Tribute to Pedro Menéndez de Avilés', which will be given by the gijonese navigator Juan Merediz on Wednesday, February 25, at 19: 00 in the conference room of the Jovellanos Library of Gijón (Gentileza Fundación Albarzonález)
The Gijonés Juan Merediz honors Pedro Menéndez de Avilés by sailing the Route of Discovery... and presents in Gijón his next project with the idea of breaking the record of this route between Cadiz and Bahamas. From this island you will sail to San Agustín, the first city of the United States founded by 'the Advanced'
Merediz, an experienced marine with more than 200,000 miles in many trips and races (Mini Transat, Figaro, Vuelta al Mundo and many other competitions...) presents its next challenge: to beat the record of the Discovery Route. "Let's go fight to beat the official record of this sailing route between Cadiz and San Salvador, in Bahamas. We will do it with crew and honoring the memory of Peter Menendez of Avilés and so, we will sail to Saint Augustine, the city that he founded and that would be the first city of what is today United States of America ", says Merediz.

The conference is organized by the Alvarzonález Foundation and the Ateneo Jovellanos and at the table will accompany the rapporteur Cecilia Alvarzonález, president of the Alvarzonzález Foundation and Ignacio Arroyo, director of the Ateneo Jovellanos. The entrance is free until you complete your capacity (courtesy of the Albargonález Foundation)
The return trip will do so alone, "also as a tribute and as a way to Santiago. Saint Augustine to Vigo, a city that successfully defended our illustrious countryman. Then I will sail to Avilés, to close the journey," notes the gijonese sailor who does not hesitate to say that Menéndez de Avilés would love to participate in this project. "I, as a sailor, would have sought the opportunity to embark on the Florida advance, however, but that's what the 20th century has been born."
